Five years ago, someone would search "pizza near me." Today, they ask Google, "Where can I get a deep dish pizza that's open right now and takes reservations?" That's natural language search. It's how 41% of local searches happen now—especially on voice and mobile. Most local businesses are still optimizing for "pizza near me." They're invisible for conversational queries. We tested this with a pizza restaurant in Chicago. They ranked #2 for "pizza near me" but zero visibility for "deep dish pizza open now with online ordering." We added a service page, updated their schema, and published 4 blog posts about their specific offerings. Six weeks later, they ranked #3 for the conversational search. They got 12 same-day orders from that visibility. That's the difference natural language makes.

Schema Markup for Conversational Intent

Basic schema helps. Natural language schema wins. Most local businesses use basic business schema. Schema for opening hours, phone, address. That's table stakes. But natural language queries require richer schema: menu items (with prices), availability, booking information, specific services, even reservation policies.

The Chicago pizza restaurant added LocalBusiness schema, but more importantly, they added MenuItem schema for each of their top 12 dishes (with descriptions and prices), and ReserveAction schema to show they accept online reservations. When someone searches "deep dish pizza open now with reservations," Google now understands they have that specific combination of offerings. The search result shows the specific menu item, the hours, and the reserve button—all because the schema was specific, not generic.

Content for Conversational Queries

Conversational searches are longer, more specific, and often phrased as questions. Your old keyword strategy doesn't work. Someone searching "best family dentist that takes insurance and has evening appointments" is not the same as someone searching "family dentist." The intent is radically different.

We created a content strategy for a family dentistry practice in Austin that mapped conversational intent to specific landing pages. Instead of one "family dentistry" page, we created: "Family Dentistry Accepting New Patients," "Family Dentist with Evening & Saturday Hours," "Family Dentist Accepting [Insurance Plan Names]," "Pediatric Dentist in North Austin." Each page targeted a specific conversational search pattern. Click-through rate increased 34% because people were finding the exact match for what they searched. We tracked search queries in Google Search Console and optimized toward the exact language people used. One new page—"Can You Use Dental Insurance at [Practice Name]?"—captured 45 monthly searches. That single page converted 8 new patients in 3 months.

Stop writing for the search term. Write for the actual question the person is asking. Natural language search rewards specificity, not cleverness.

FAQ Content That Wins Conversational Visibility

Natural language queries often match FAQ patterns. A person searching "Can I get a crown the same day?" is asking an FAQ question. Most sites bury FAQs in a separate page. We structure them as H2s on relevant landing pages, with proper FAQ schema. This tells Google these are frequently asked questions—and it makes the content more likely to match conversational queries.

The Austin dentist practice added 18 FAQ entries to their main pages (6 on the "new patient" page, 5 on the "cosmetic dentistry" page, 4 on "emergency care," 3 on "insurance"). Within 8 weeks, they started showing up in AI-generated search summaries for conversational questions. Google's AI summary would cite their FAQ entry when someone asked "What does a crown procedure involve?" Each citation generated 2–4 clicks. Over 4 months, the FAQ schema contributed to 34 qualified leads—no paid ads involved.
